Other external losses in exudate or hemorrhage Renal protein loss (protein-losing nephropathies) Gastrointestinal protein loss (protein-losing enteropathies) Hepatic failure (failure of albumin synthesis) The potential causes of hypoalbuminemia are many, and include: The fluid that typically leaks into extravascular spaces is a pure transudate:ĭecreased oncotic pressure and loss of intravascular fluid can also lead to hypovolemia, which in turn can lead to problems such as poor peripheral perfusion and pre-renal azotemia. ![]() These clinical signs reflect the hypoalbuminemic patient's impaired ability to hold fluid within the vascular space, and usually only occur when plasma albumin levels drop to between 10 and 16 g/L. The classic clinical manifestations of hypoalbuminemia include peripheral edema, ascites and pleural effusion. Hypoalbuminemia leads to a decrease in plasma oncotic pressure, which can eventually lead to a leakage of fluid out from the vascular compartment. The oncotic pressure within vessels due to the presence of albumin is the major force holding fluid within the vascular compartment, although other plasma proteins such as globulins also have some oncotic force. Albumin, in contrast, is too large to pass freely through the vascular endothelium, and remains within the bloodstream. Most of the important osmotically-active particles in the bloodstream (such as sodium, urea and glucose) are relatively small, and pass freely between the vascular and interstitial compartments, the body's two major extracellular fluid compartments. It is nicknamed the Portuguese Rabbit Dog.Albumin is the major determinant of oncotic or colloidal osmotic pressure, the force that holds fluids within the vascular compartment. In Portugal these dogs are used for hunting, ratting, guard work and companionship. Human intervention in breeding has reduced the Medio's size, while leaving other characteristics intact. Hunting in packs or alone, the Portuguese Hounds became very skilled at hunting rabbits. It is sometimes still used as a small-game hunter there. Although the Medio's closest relative, the Podengo Grande, is now very rare, this lively and alert medium-sized hound remains a popular dog, particularly in rural parts of northern Portugal. However, the Podengo could be a descendant of small Iberian wolves. ![]() The Grande, from which the Medio and Pequeno evolved, is similar to the tan-colored sighthounds, such as the Pharaoh Hound, which spread out of North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula. There are two possible origins of all Podengo Portugueso. The Podengo Portugueso comes in three sizes: The Grande (large), Medio (medium) and Pequeno (small). Brushing will reduce shedding as well as make the coat softer and cleaner. Moderate Shedding: Expect this dog to shed regularly. Because this breed has had relatively limited intervention by humans, it has a low incidence of known inherited defects or diseases. Low Maintenance: Grooming is only necessary once in a while to maintain upkeep. This fast and very active breed needs a lot of daily exercise, including a daily, long, brisk walk or jog. It is also friendly toward other pets and friendly toward strangers. Good with Kids: This is a suitable dog breed for kids. This breed is well-suited for hot sunny climates and can live and sleep outdoors so long as they have adequate shelter. The Podengo Portugueso Medio is not recommended for apartment life.
